South Carolina trying to hold off top SEC rivals for four-star QB

Ryan Montgomery would be a big-time commitment for South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer — if he and his staff can pull it off. That itself is good news for Beamer and the Gamecocks, because right now they appear to be favored in the four-star quarterback's recruitment.

With that said, Montgomery is also strongly considering Florida and Georgia, and with official visits to all three visits scheduled before the calendar officially turns to summer — the rubber is about to meet the road.

He'll officially visit South Carolina on April 20, Florida on June 14 and UGA on June 22. It sounds like Montgomery is very well-connected with South Carolina, but it's going to be tough for the Gamecocks to hold the Gators and Bulldogs off.

The good news for South Carolina? The four-star seems to really like Beamer as well as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dol Loggains.

"Coach Beamer and Coach Loggains, I have a really good relationship with them. They’ve been there since Day 1. And since they started recruiting me, they’ve been true to me," Montgomery recently told On3. "I have a super special [relationship] with Coach Loggains, he’s someone that I know I would love to be around for the next three to four to five years. And I know my parents would say the same. They’d be comfortable with me being there under Coach Loggains.

"South Carolina is a super special place, and they’re building something special. They have kind of a family vibe and a family tradition, and it’s very family-oriented. They’re going to work super hard but they’re going to have fun doing it. Coach Beamer is fun to be around, just getting to sit in meetings and be on the phone with him. I get nothing but good vibes from him and the whole staff there.”

That sounds great for the Gamecocks, but the problem is...Montgomery also really likes the staff at Florida. He, of course, is also very impressed by what Kirby Smart has done in Athens.

"They’re the standard in college football now. Everybody is trying to get to where they’re at. Obviously back-to-back national championships. I know going there, I’m going to get developed to the NFL and that’s my ultimate goal. Going there under Coach Smart, he runs a great program," Montgomery said of UGA.

Ultimately this seems like South Carolina's quarterback to lose, but anything can and does happen on the recruiting trail — so look out.

According to 247Sports, Montgomery is the No. 12 quarterback in the 2025 class.
